It is estimated that around 25% of young people are suited to self-employment. But many need care, counselling and support to realise their ambitions.

Skill training organisations
One of the frustrations of dedicated skills trainers is that they prepare and motivate a young person for a trade – and then find there are no opportunities for that young person to use his or her skills.

Government and non-government organisations
It is not common for such agencies to consider self-employment as an option, however they can become strong allies if they are shown that young people can benefit from working for themselves.

Schools, colleges and universities
All educational establishments provide formal and informal guidance on careers. The same arguments outlined above on the benefits of self-employment should be made to teachers, lecturers and careers officers.

Youth development and organisations
Organisations working with young people to develop their self esteem and life skills. Very few are able to help young people start new businesses. YBI has already built partnerships with international organisations such as the Shell Livewire, Junior Achievement, Duke of Edinburgh Awards Scheme and the Commonwealth Youth Programme.

Local organisations
Many organisations, such as youth clubs or the Church, work at local level with young people. Local board members will know these organisations and should develop partnerships with them.

Specialist organisations
Agencies and organisations working with young people with special needs, such as those with disabilities or young offenders should also be contacted.

Outreach workers
You may also want to use outreach workers who can work in specially defined areas of need. These areas could be geographic, or could target certain sectors of disadvantaged young people such as young offenders or the long-term unemployed.

Word of mouth
Probably the most potent means. A young person who has benefited from your help is your best ambassador. Once an initiative is established you should advertise your success stories at all opportunities.
